Dear Indian Lake Parents,

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2007/2008 school year. Our teachers and staff have prepared another wonderful agenda of exciting and challenging learning activities for this school year. Here is a sneak preview of some of the fall events:

Our first major event of the year is the building Open House. This takes place on Monday, September 17th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We are hoping that all Indian Lake parents stop by to meet their child’s new teacher. During your visit please take a minute to sign up to volunteer to help us at one or more of our special events this year. Each classroom teacher will have a sign up poster in the classroom on the Open House evening. We appreciate all the extra help we can get planning and making special events happen. Also teachers will be passing out Parent Curriculum handbooks at open house. These parent handbooks were prepared by the State of Michigan and they outline the curriculum expectations for all grade levels. The handbooks are also written in parent friendly language to help make it easier for parents to understand the skills that kids need to master at each grade level.

This years Fall Fundraiser Kick-Off will be help on Tuesday, September 18th at 3:00pm. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the PTSO: Parents, Teachers and Students Organization. Parents we encourage you to get involved in PTSO events and activities. This organization is always looking for new and friendly faces to help with all types of school events. The following dates have been set for this years PTSO meetings. All meetings are held in the school Library at 6:30 p.m.

Summer Reading Incentive - On September 19th at 2:45 pm we are rewarding all students who completed the summer reading project by having an ice cream social. In addition, the students who completed the “Book Talk” expectations will also be scheduled to meet that afternoon to discuss the special book they read over the summer.

School pictures will take place on Tuesday, September 25th.

First three weeks in October – MEAP tests for third, fourth and fifth grade! Teachers have been busy reviewing grade level skills to prepare students for the upcoming series of Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests. All 3rd-5th grade students are tested in Language Arts which includes writing and Math skills. Fifth graders are tested in the area of Science. Our students score exceptionally high on all these tests. In fact, last year Vicksburg’s scores were in the top five when compared to thirty-eight neighboring school districts.

The Accelerated Reader reward for the first quarter of this year is being planned for the third, fourth and fifth grade. Tentative plans are in the works for students to visit the Jungle Joe’s Family Fun Center on Sprinkle Road. This is a recreation site has many large blow up jumpy toys! Our first and second graders went last year and they had a fun time!

Safety Issue – Change in the Elementary handbook “Heelies are not Allowed at School”!

Please do not send your child to school with the Heelie shoes. They are a safety issue and a custodial issue. Kids can fall and the shoes damage our floors. In addition, Mrs. Getsinger our gym teacher has seen that Heelies with the wheels taken out are not appropriate gym shoes. The holes in the bottom can catch on objects and students can trip and fall. Again, help us out do not send your student to school with Heelie shoes. Thanks!

If you have any questions about school events, school policy, etc. please call me at 321 -1400. Looking forward to another great year here at Indian Lake.

Rick Szabla
Principal
Indian Lake Elementary

Second graders spent a day at the OEC cleaning up leaves and debris from the flower beds.

Thank You, Vicksburg Community!

Thank you, Vicksburg Community, for demonstrating your strong support of our schools in the May 6 school election.

Vicksburg’s Non-Homestead Operating Millage was renewed by almost a 2:1 margin, which will allow us to continue to collect the full minimum State Foundation Allowance.

In addition, incumbents Skip Knowles and Carol Lohman were returned to the School Board.

The majority (57%) of Kalamazoo County voters agreed to renew the KRESA County Enhancement Millage for three years. The District will utilize the proceeds for necessary capital expenditure (roofs, parking lots, technology, repairs and renovations, and traffic flow improvements which cannot otherwise be afforded.

Our hats are off to our voters, and our commitment to you is continued excellence and fiscal integrity.
